What to Wear for Photographs That Feel Like You

Colors, textures, and a few easy rules for outfits that photograph beautifully and still feel like yourself.

One of the most common questions I hear before a session is what to wear. The short answer: wear what makes you feel most like yourself. The longer answer comes with a few simple guidelines that help your photographs feel timeless and true to you.

Start with a soft palette

Neutral and muted tones like ivory, sage, oat, soft blue, and warm gray photograph beautifully in natural light and look effortless together. A single gentle accent color adds interest without pulling attention from your faces.

Coordinate, don’t match

Aim for outfits that complement each other rather than mirror each other. Choose a shared color family, then vary the shades and textures so you look like a pair without looking like a uniform.

Choose texture and movement

Linen, knits, flowing dresses, and soft cotton all catch the light and move with you. Fabrics that sway in the breeze or drape naturally bring a sense of life to every frame, especially during walking and dancing prompts.

“Kenzie helped us pick outfits that felt like us on a really good day. We still love how natural everything looks.”

Skip the busy details

Large logos, bold graphic prints, and very small patterns can distract the eye or flicker in photographs. Keep accessories simple and meaningful: a favorite watch, a family ring, a hat you always wear.

Dress for the setting and the season

Think about where we’re going. Flats or boots for a meadow walk, a light layer for a breezy river overlook, something a little dressier for an estate garden. Comfortable clothes let you relax, and relaxed couples make the best photographs.
