Five Ways to Feel at Ease in Front of the Camera

Simple, practical ways to let go of the nerves and enjoy your session, no posing experience required.

Almost every couple tells me the same thing before their session: “We’re really awkward in photos.” The good news is that feeling at ease isn’t a talent. It’s something we build together, and it usually takes about ten minutes. Here are five simple ways to get there.

1. Focus on each other, not the lens

The camera doesn’t need your attention. Talk, tease, hold hands, tell a story only the two of you know. When you’re focused on each other, your expressions soften naturally, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for.

2. Keep moving

Stillness is where stiffness creeps in. Walking, swaying, spinning, or even pretending to race each other keeps your body relaxed and gives every frame a sense of life. Most of my favorite photographs happen mid-step.

3. Let the prompts do the work

I don’t ask for perfect poses. Instead, I’ll give you small prompts, like whispering your favorite memory or describing the moment you knew. They’re designed to spark real reactions, so you never have to fake a smile.

“By the end, we forgot Kenzie was even taking pictures. It just felt like a really good afternoon together.”

4. Wear something you love moving in

If you’re tugging at a hemline or worrying about your shoes, it shows. Choose outfits that feel like the best version of you and let you walk, sit, and hug without thinking about it.

5. Give yourself permission to laugh

Nervous laughter, inside jokes, a misstep in the grass: none of it ruins a photograph. Those unplanned moments are often the ones you’ll treasure most, because they look and feel exactly like you.
